Ah the random jaunts to Craigslist. What can I find today? A gently used Malibu, a free bookshelf, a can of ramen noodles. So many things.

Well I have come to learn that I am in the range of many interesting and affordable classic cars. Yes most of them are the lesser desirable versions, but they are reasonably attainable and in half way decent shape.

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Comes with the 6.5L V8 Rocket. motor, with 136k miles, which is quite high for a car of this vintage. The interior is in pretty good shape, especially for it being original. Most of the exterior body work looks like some patching and fine detailing. Yours for only $6000.

Ad preserved below.

*1964 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight* Clean title. 4 door sedan. V8 - 6.5L - 394ci “Rocket” engine. 136,000 miles on odometer. New plugs, wires, electric fuel pump/filter. Fresh oil/filter change. 1 year old battery. Original interior is mostly good. Carpet is slightly faded and has some stains. AM radio. Power antenna. Air conditioning. Power steering. Power brakes. Glass refill bottle. Manual windows and locks. Removable wheel skirts. Tires are drivable and in decent condition. Garage kept most of its life. Large trunk space with full size spare. Windows are not tinted, just covered to prevent sun damage. Surface rust underneath and a few spots on the body. Motor runs well, but radiator has a leak in the top seam. More pics available upon request. Worth a look!

$6,000.00 (negotiable)

Cruise around in this pimpmobile. Little details are given, but it has a V8 with 90k miles on it. The body looks fairly straight and the interior looks like it has been stored in a garage for 20 years. This one will definitely need some help to be pristine again, but compared to some “barn finds.: This one is pretty straight. You also cannot deny how dope it looks. Yours for $6950 OBO.

Yes, it is a four door. No it is not the iconic Bel Air that everyone wants, but for $6900, there is still a lot of potential to turn this into a looker at the next cruise night.

Kinja'd!!!

It definitely needs a good dusting and a replacement for the 80s Buick wheels, but most of the other parts are there. Unfortunately there are no interior shots which really make or break this deal, but if the interior is as good as the exterior, it may be a worthwhile project. Yours for $6900 OBO.

Ad preserved below.

Putting my 1958 belair up for sale! Kind of a rare car...it’s a true 4 door hardtop (meaning no post between the doors)... Don’t see these hardly ever! It runs and drives good! Very cool looking car! Has a 307 with an automatic tranny. Come take a look and make an offer...would like to see it go to a good home. Asking $6900 obo. Call or text **********. Thanks and God Bless!

Back before Mustangs were plowing into pedestrians, they were muscle car status symbols. This particular Mustang is a regular convertible with the Ford 302. It is not a T5 or a hype desireable Mach 1, but at $8000, it is a great entry into the classic Mustang club.

Kinja'd!!!

The interior needs some assistance, but it looks like that is only with the floor mats and dashboard. If you are looking for a “relatively” easy classic summer cruiser project, then this may be right for you. Yours for $8000 obo.

Ad preserved below

Very nice car, not perfect but still looks and runs great! 302 V8, auto, new top, new top boot, new fuel pump, new tires, and brake work. Not many made of these, and hardly any this nice.

What say you Oppo are these classic car Craigslist finds NPoCP?

I don’t know about NP, but all four of these are “STOP HACKING MY BRAIN” levels of being inline with my tastes.

I’d say yes to the Oldsmobile, but I’m a little biased - I’ve owned and DD’d a ‘64 Olds, and loved it. The rust concerns me a little bit. Pics of the Riv are sketchy, but a tentative NP. Hell yes on the ‘58 Chevy - but better look closely at the rockers, and as you mention, the lack of interior pics scares me. And swap that motor out for something better. Finally, the Mustang seems OK, but I only glanced quickly at it.

Is it weird that it ’ s really the Olds and Chevy 4 door sedan / hardtop that turn me on way more than the Riv and the Mustang?

that beige top of the mustang just seems off...

Do you mean the color? I’ve always believed that beggars can’t be choosers when it comes to cars that old - I’ll take what I can get. I’ve never actually seen a beige top on that gen Mustang before, though- not sure if it’s the lighting?

yeah, the ad says the top is new, so it has been replaced at some point. idk if that specific car came in that beige (others did), but to me with the paint design, I would think it would have a black top.

Kinja'd!!!

Would that I not buy it because of that, no. That is something I can replace on my own.

Kind of, but I see where you’re coming from.

Oh, it’s not “kind of” weird. It *IS* weird. But I’ve been fascinated with ‘55-’68 Detroit iron for 45 years, and it ain’t changing now.

I think I actually like the beige too. Looks more luxury less sporty, and this gen of Mustang is far from sporty. Not exactly luxurious either tho.

The first two are a little more than I’d be willing to pay, but the Bel Air seems NP to me, if the interior is good and it’s fundamentally mechanically sound. The Mustang is nice, but also a little high for me.

Nor should it. As well preserved examples get harder to find, celebrating the good ones becomes important.

fair point. That black trim below just makes the top stick out to me. If that wasn’t there the beige top wouldn’t be so “out of place” looking

Yes, for the moment, circumstances only allow me to drool over these from afar, but any time I see one that’s straight and serviceable, I get excited - even if there’s a bit of rust on it. In the not too distant future, though, I plan to own one (or more?) again—

Generally speaking, on most convertibles the top and seat colors should match, unless the manufacturer only offered black tops. On newer cars, they’re often complementary rather than matching. I agree that it’s not the right color, but yeah, I’m not too hung up on it, either.

this one looks better both because it doesn’t have the black trim, and it has a white interior. Speaking of which, that black trim on the ad you posted is a sign of rust repair - don’t think it was offered that way from the factory, unless perhaps on a Mach I or something.

Shopping. Car buying is a long process for my family because we are very conservative and careful about money. My wife is very much behind me getting this car, though, and I will actually end up owning one of my dream cars.

Also I’ve never bought a used car before, and I want to make sure I avoid all the pitfalls I can. When I get to some finalists, I may come back to you all to point out what I haven’t though of.

Good for you! It’s a big decision, so it’s better to take your time and do it right. I haven’t bought a used car in some time, but may go that route for my next DD. Keep us posted - I’m sure that Oppo will be glad to contribute its $0.02 when you’re ready!
